These
are the most common question asked when initially speaking with a new patient. The answer is simple,
yet slightly difficult to grasp when you try to understand it for the first time.
Let’s give it a try! Fat =
Fuel When the body needs fuel, it accesses body fat. Low fuel levels in the blood signal
the body to increase fat storage. When you lose access to fat storage, the levels in the blood
drop, causing even greater fat storage. The real problem=fat access NOT fat storage.
However, the body reacts to the low fuel not a loss of access.
1. Lipolysis:
(lipo=fat) (lysis=removal) Lipolysis=fat removal)
Lipolysis is the process of removing
fat and turning it back into fuel for your body to use. Body fat can be easily compared to the gas
tank in your car. The gas tank allows you to effectively travel without the need to stop every 5 minutes
to get more gas. Fat stores fuel from the previous meal. Your body pulls from the body
fat between meals, allowing for a constant supply of fuel. It is estimated that a person may use body fat
up to 17 hours a day as a primary fuel supply.
So, FAT=FUEL
2. Metabolism
Metabolism is the word used to describe the use of fuel (FAT) to make energy.
A break in the fat removal process results in
a fuel supply problem for the rest of the body. When your body is no longer able to get the fuel
out of the fat, your brain decides that you must not have enough fat storage. This makes sense doesn’t
it! If your car kept running out of gas, your instinct would be to keep fueling up “keep storing
more fat”. You may even store extra gas in the trunk of your car “just in case”.
However, the real problem is not a lack of fat! The problem is the ability to get to
it!
This is the
problem found in over 95% of the patients at our office with weight gain, or inability to lose weight issues.
JUST SO YOU KNOW. (What we have discovered through medical
observation)
Just
so you know, here are two considerations that are obvious, yet perplexing observations.
Dieting: Restricting
food intake (dieting) eliminates the already limited amount of fuel your body has access to. In all cases,
dieting causes a worsening of the condition due to added restriction of fuel “food”. This is
why most people stop being able to lose weight by dieting over time and always have an increase in weight gain shortly after
stopping their diet.
Exercise: Exercise quickly uses the already limited supply of fuel.
Although exercise and dieting may work in the first few years of weight gain, it produces greater stress on the metabolism.
Exercise, just like dieting will eventually lead to faster weight gain and an inability to lose weight in the future.
WHAT DOCTORS AND PHYSICIANS DON'T YET KNOW:
Weight gain is not the result of overeating,
under exercise or lack of self control. Its just not chemically possible. Weight gain
is the result of a dysfunction in the body’s ability to access body fat and convert it back into fuel. The
result is a lack of fuel resulting in a slowing of metabolism and a desperate attempt of the body to store more fuel to survive.
The impact is devastating, resulting in lowered energy levels and increased fat accumulation. Even more
profound is the psychological damage that occurs to the individuals that are told that "its there problem"
and given instructions to increase exercise and restrictive dieting. All the more compounding "worsening"
the actual problem. These desperate individuals are often looked at as "big fat liars" and are suspected
of not trying. To make matters worse, the development of complicated secondary health issues always
start, including: High blood pressure, Diabetes, High cholesterol and Obesity.
